Citizens Advice Bureaux across Leicestershire have received reports from people who have felt conned by companies offering to buy their unwanted clothes.
Ann Bates, Consumer Information Gathering Project Officer with the CAB, explained they’ve received several complaints recently from consumers who sold their clothes to online companies, but hadn’t received any money.
She said “There are several online companies who operate locally advertising buying unwanted clothes for cash. They offer to arrange to pick up bags of clothing, grade them, and send out a payment within a week to ten days. None of the people who have spoken to us had received any money. They have all contacted the companies involved and some said that staff had been quite rude to them. One person had even collected clothes from friends and neighbors so that the money raised could be donated to a specific charity.”
“We are worried that the reports we have had are just the tip of the iceberg. Several of the victims felt that as the amount of money involved was only a few pounds reporting it seemed trivial. We think that many people may have simply put this loss down to experience. Whereas if this is happening to a large number of people then this is a serious matter, the resale of secondhand clothing is big business.”
If you live in the Leicestershire area and have a similar story please give CAB a call on 0300 330 1025 or drop into Charnwood CAB or LeicesterShire CAB. You will need to have full details of the name and address of the company which took your clothes away. CAB say they want to see how big the problem is so that they can work with Trading Standards if necessary to make sure that these traders operate within the law.
